How to survive winter, when you don’t like it at all

If you’re in the northern hemisphere, consider yourself lucky and ignore this article. If you ‘re on the southern half of planet earth like us, welcome to our winter survival kit.

1| Fight all the winter colds and put Tumeric in everything!

The stuff is truly amazing.. it’s said to be anti-inflammatory properties work a charm in my experience. As soon as I’m coming down with a cold I have a shot of the below recipe and it’s gone the next day!

in a shot glass:
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1tsp fresh ginger
1 tsp tumeric powder
1tsp cinnamon
1tsp honey (manuka if available)
dash cayenne pepper
hot water

2| Hot foot baths

You could have a proper full bath but you might not want to do that every single day. A foot bath on the other hand is easy, saves water and it’s sooo good! Chuck a tablespoon of magnesium chloride in and it’s more relaxing than a glass of wine.

3| Get the blood flowing

If you are cold, it’s probably because your blood is standing still. That’s at least how I feel! So you better get it moving.. Whether that’s going to the gym, bodyweight training in the park or a dance party in the living room. Keep going until the sweat’s dripping of your face!

4| Sauna

I’m not sure, why Australia thinks they don’t need saunas, but there don’t seem to be as many day spa sauna places around here. When I used to live in Germany it was a thing to go to a sauna spa for the day, have several sauna courses with cold water baths, sleeps in between. It’s warm, keeps you healthy and makes you feel like in heaven.

5| Get out the memories and watch your videos from summer

Note to self: Need to take more footage in summer! Unfortunately I only have one video from last summer:

6| Rug up!

Layers is all I can say.. Especially in Queensland you leave the house in the morning and it’s freezing and as soon as the sun comes out you want to be in shirt and shorts..

7| Follow the sun

Obviously if you have some holiday budget in your piggy bank, what are you waiting for? No one said you have to live in winter at all!

8| Gluhwein or mulled wine as they call it

It’s heaven. Get some fruity choice of wine, add some spices like cinnamon sticks, cloves, brown sugar and orange slices and heat it up. If you take it to the kitespot, everyone is going to love you forever ;)

9| Invest in a really good wetsuit

If you’re one of the hardened-up and won’t let winter stop you from getting in the water, you might want to treat yourself to a good quality wetsuit that will keep you warm in the water at all times. If you’re in Germany or some colder areas that might include gloves and wetsuit beanie as well!

10| Use the off-time of the water to work and save for summer

You might as well.. What are you going to do with all the time that you spent on the beach in summer now that there is no wind? Use it to prepare for the next season. Do some extra work to buy the new gear you were looking at getting for summer or for the next holiday trip or to take some more time of work in summer. You don’t want to be the one sitting in the office when it’s windy again.

Niiiice… it’s so awesome watching that Video… I had nearly forgotten how much fun it is kiting! Now I have focus and inspiration again to keep up with my strength training through the winter, just when it was starting to get a bit boring, but now I remember my goals and why I am doing it!!
    Bring on Summer!
In saying that though, the winter has been pretty nice here so far and just like you said about having a good wetsuit, I have a really comfy steamer and I didn’t have to pay full price for it either i bought it from a warehouse. So I’ve been able to get out in the surf… now that theres no wind, and the waves are all glassy n nice :-D So anyway back to my indoboard cross training and I’m going to try your Tumeric drink!! Thanks Miss Summer…. can’t wait to see your collection!
